Allogona profunda (Say)
Broad-banded Forestsnail
Habitat & Distribution
The Polygyridae family of snails, which includes Allogona Profunda (Say), have been commonly found to live under dead wood, leaves, under stones, which are primarily limestone and shale (Pilsbry, 1940). These snails tend to only come out in the open at night or during rain. The young snails of this species are much more active then their adult counterparts, which means they have the tendency to wander around more freely than the adults (Pilsbry, 1940). These snails can also be commonly found within woodlands close to favorable habitats such as log mold in advanced stages (Blinn, 1963).
The typical habitat of this species of land snail, Allogona profunda (Say), is dense, moist upland woods, and especially on bluffs (Pilsbry, 1940). These snails were also observed in prairie groves of northern and western Iowa and eastern Nebraska (Pilsbry 1940).
The distribution of the snail Allogona profunda (Say) ranges across central and eastern North America, from Kansas all the way east to New York (NatureServe, 2011). Also, this snail can be found in Canada in the southern part of Ontario around Lake Erie (NatureServe, 2011). This Broad-banded Forestsnail, Allogona profunda (Say), has been discovered in the following states Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin (NatureServe, 2011).
