Allogona profunda (Say)
Broad-banded Forestsnail
Reproduction
Allogona profunda (Say) mating habits happen to be unique and different from most species of land snails. Mating begins with the courting of a mate, which begins with the appearance of sex organs (Webb, 1948). Now, this is when the courtship of this land snail starts to become unique by the inception of biting duels. The effect of these biting duels is to cause an increased arousal of the sex organs (Webb, 1948).
In general, the members of the order, pulmonata, tend to reproduce quicker and at smaller sizes, and reproduce larger numbers of offspring but have shorter life cycles (NatureServe, 2011).
The male penis of Allogona profunda (Say) is described as having an underdeveloped sheath containing a large stimulator (Pilsbry, 1940).
The female sex organ of this snail is a large tubular body, which then appears to separate into two different parts, a transversely-rugose basal part, and a much smoother more tumid terminal part (Webb, 1948).
Many Allogona profunda (Say), observed during Walter C. Blinn's study of them, were found to remain juvenile for two winters (Blinn, 1963). Also, one life span of four years was documented during this study for Allogona profunda (Say) (Blinn, 1963).
