Habitat

Phantom Crane Flies are typically found in moist and shaded habitats, such as swamps, moist woodlands, wetlands and along stream margins (Wild Florida Photo 2010).  They are most often spotted during the warmer seasons in the eastern region of the United States.  The adults are mainly found from May through September.  Some are found later in the year in Florida (Wild Florida Photo 2010.  The darker areas of the map above indicate where Phantom Cranes Flies have been found.  As you can see on the map, this fly has been found in some parts of Canada and almost half of the east cost of the United States (Bugguide 2010).
