Daphnia, including D. pulex account for the majority of
the organisms found in freshwater ecosystems!
Daphnia can filter ALL of the algae out of a lake at a rate of
4ml/hr!
D. pulex are only 1.0-3.5 mm in length!
Because their skin is transparent, D. pulex is commonly used in
laboratories. You can even see their digestive tract, heartbeat,
and eggs through their skin!
Daphnia are used as an indicator of how well an ecosystem is doing due to their place in the food web.
Daphnia can actually manipulate their own body form in time of
desperate need!
Daphnia are a great resource in the lab to test effects of many
different toxins!
