Longnose Gar

Lepisosteus osseus, or the Longnose Gar as it is commonly called, is a long bony fish with a long snout found only in the eastern part of the United States.  These creatures have been around since the dinosaurs!  They have undergone little evolutionary changes because they are very well adapted to live in a lot of different habitats.  They have many sharp teeth and 'heavy armor' scales making it a predator to many and a prey to none.  They are darker colored on top, brown, grey, or olive green, with a white bottom.  They have stripes along their sides, as well.  They even have an air bladder for breathing in the air.

There is a link back to the Multiple Organisms homepage, as well as one to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's homepage, on the bottom of every page for your convenience.
