Domain Eucaryota

Organisms are classified in the domain Eucaryota based on the presence of membrane-bound organelles, nuclei, and nuclear envelopes within their cells. Garlic falls within the domain of life known as Eucaryota.

Kingdom Plantae

This classification most commonly describes the multicellular groups known as flowering plants, ferns, mosses, and conifers. Unifying characteristics include the presence of cellulose in cell walls and the use of photosynthesis in energy acquisition.

Subkingdom Tracheobionta

More commonly known as vascular plants, these plants contain specialized tissues for the circulation of the necessary materials for cellular respiration.

Division Magnoliophyta

Magnoliophyta, also known as angiosperms are seed producing plants. Synapomorphic characteristics of angiosperms are the production of flowers, formation of endosperm within the seeds, and production of seeds within an enclosure.

Class Liliopsida

Liliopsida is a synonymous term for monocots. Defining characteristics of this class include scattered vascular bundles, adventitious roots, parallel leaf veins, and the formation of trimerous flowers.

Order Liliales

The order Liliales contains a diverse group of taxa with a variety of morphological characteristics. This was accomplished mainly via molecular data.

Family Liliaceae

Characteristics of this family include linear leaves that contain parallel veins, and some individuals produce bulbs.

Genus Allium

Allium describes a group of perennial bulbous plants that produce chemical compounds that give them the characteristic onion or garlic taste and odor. The genus also includes other garlics, onions, leeks, and chives. Allium is the Latin genus name which in English means garlic.

Species sativum

The species sativum describes the plant know as common garlic and means "cultivated," in english.
