  Phylogenetic Tree of Penguins

 

 

       This phylogenetic tree contains all of the Penguin genera. Each genus is a monophyletic group, meaning that the organisms in each genus share a common ancestor.  For example, the King and Emperor Penguins in the Aptenodytes genus share one common ancestor.  The root of this tree, which would be the common ancestor of all the penguins, is unclear.
