This lizard lives in some hot and dry climates. It has had to adapt to survive in such conditions. One of the most fascinating adaptations is it's ability to collect water when it rains. Its scales are specially designed not only for protection, but also for collection. When it rains, the lizard lowers its head and allows the water to channel down its back and into its waiting mouth. This allows for maximum collection of water. This is important because of the little rain that these habitats receive. The lizard can also store a large amount of water for further use. Another interesting adaptation is it's ability to shoot blood from its eyes at predators. This is discussed in more detail in the "Staying Alive" section of this site (Ott). |
