The Texas horned lizard can be found from the southern Great Plains to far East of the Rockies. It is most concentrated in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and New Mexico. It is also found in Colorado, Arizona and deep in Mexico. It prefers arid and semiarid climate with lots of open country. It lives with scarce vegetation like cacti, mesquite, Junipers and woody shrubs. It lives with other cold blooded reptiles like snakes and lizards that rely on the warm of the sun to jump start their metabolism.  At the Davis Mountains of Texas it lives with two other lizards like itself. It lives mostly in the sandy flats, while the Round tail lizard occupies the rocky areas and the Short horned lizard lives in the higher elevations. It usually lives at sea level but can live at elevations as high as 6500 feet (Manaster).   Horny Toad hiding in the sand. (Wyman Meinzer)
