Habitat and Geography

Barley is best grown in drained loams and clay loams.  It is more tolerant to salty soils, with a Ph 6.0 to 8.0.  However, barley is less tolerant to acidic soils, with Ph below 5.0.  Nitrogen fertilization will help in production.

Seed planting varies depending on climate.  In the southwestern part of the U.S. barley is generally planted in the late fall to winter.  In the northern parts of the U.S. barley is usually planted in the first parts of March.

Red-Green Joint Harvest by Evan Laubach

Barley is susceptible to diseases, especially in humid climates.  There are several types of fungi that can affect barley; one of them is Ustilago bordei.  This fungus causes covered smut.  Due to the susceptibility of diseases, barley production in humid areas isn’t too high.

Here is a video of barley being harvested.
