Trichinella spiralis

Stayin' Alive

Acquiring nutrients is very simple in these organisms because they are parasitic. When these organisms are ingested, they begin to develop and travel until they arrive in the bloodstream. Within the blood stream there are tons of nutrients that these organisms can utilize, such as sugars, lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. http://www.sideshowtoy.com/placed/011306graboid_01.jpgIn simplest terms, these organisms steal whatever nutrients their hosts have acquired. They accomplish this through the use of their buccal cavity in the uptake of nutrients from the bloodstream.

When the nutrients have been ingested through the buccal cavity, they travel through the digestive system of these organisms. These organisms are small enough that they don’t need a circulatory system to supply their tissues with nutrients because all of the cells of these organisms get sufficient nutrients through simple diffusion across their membranes. The nutrients left over after absorption are excreted from the body through the rectum.
