Does it interact with other organisms?
The
European turtle dove is suspected to be one of the principal
introductory host of the
West Nile virus into new regions of the
world. The West Nile virus originated in the West Nile
region of Uganda. From there it spread to Africa, the
Middle East and southern temperate zones of Eurasia. This
spread of the disease was helped along by
migratory birds like
the turtle dove. The reason why migratory birds, including
the turtle dove are suspected to be the principal introductory
hosts of the West Nile virus in these new regions is because in
late summer to early fall, large amounts of migratory birds
arrive in these regions. The migratory birds bring with
them large amounts of mosquitoes (a carrier for the disease plus
many other
human diseases).
Coincidentally, outbreaks of the disease have coincided with the
arrival of these birds and the mosquitoes. The European
turtle dove is suspected to be a principal introductory host of
the West Nile out of all of these birds specifically because the
virus has been isolated from turtle doves that are actively
migrating.
