Welcome!

The licorice plant, Glycyrrhiza glabra, is known throughout the world for its medicinal properties. This plant produces a compound known as glycyrrhizic acid within its roots and which is responsible for the observed properties. This acid is said to be capable of treating ulcers and act as an anti-inflammatory agent, but cautions should be taken when taking this acid. These properties will be discussed in greater detail later on in this website (see Medicinal Properties).

Glycyrrhiza glabra can commonly be found growing in Asia, Europe, Australia, and the Americas. Licorice tends to grow in drier soils with plenty of sunlight exposure. Glycyrrhiza glabra is part of the legume family and has the ability to fix nitrogen with the help of a symbiotic relationship with bacteria located on the roots of the plant.
