Averrhoa carambola
Interactions
Starfruit does interact with many different organisms, but mostly in a non-mutualistic way.
There is the Plumose (Morganell longispina) which attack the leaves and foliage. This cause leaf damage and decrease in nutrients.
Weevil (Diaprepes abbreviatus) affects the roots and can damage them to the point of root death.
Stink bugs (Nezara sp.) and squash bugs (Acanthocephala sp.) can cause small puncture wounds through the waxy surface therefore drying out the fleshy inside. This can be seen as small dark spots on the fruits surface. This leaves the fruit more susceptible to fungal infections becuase it can be used for an access point. These bugs are also a common pests to plants such as wheat and pumpkins.
When the fruits start to appear the tree is more likely to become infected by fungus because it has a good growth medium. Ripe starfruit can be attacked by the fungus Pythium splendens, which have been a main attribute, tree decline syndrome.
