This list of facts was complied while researching the Southern Cassowary for this website.

-The Southern Cassowary is considered the modern Velociraptor because of its extremely large talons on its feet.  Cassowaries have been known to use these talons in a sort of "jump attack" when in a confrontation. These attacks have been known to inflict gaping wounds on humans, and domesticated animals.

-The Southern Cassowary is considered a vulnerable species on the ICUN Red List, and endangered according to the Federal Australian and Queensland State governments.

-Cassowaries consume about an average of 2.9 kilograms of fruit a day in captivity.

-The Southern Cassowary got its name from the Papuan wor meaning, "Horned Head".

-According to the 2004 Guiness Book of World Records, the southern cassowary is the world's most dangerous bird. (Funtrivia, n.d.)
