Interactions

crocSince the Paraceratherium are so large at maturity, it is thought that only the babies would be vulnerable to predators. If elephants are considered, almost a quarter of baby Asian elephants are killed by tigers before they even reach a year old (Prothero, 2013).  The Paraceratherium calves were preyed upon gigantic crocodiles that were 33-36 feet long.  It is thought that they would be large enough to prey upon Paraceratheriums near a river (Prothero, 2013).  This interaction is supported because many bone specimen gathered from the Bugti beds had crocodile teeth marks on them (Prothero: P.-O. Antoine, pers. comm., 2011).
