This snail feeds by grazing on small food items surrounding its environment. It will feed on small softer type plants that do not take a lot of energy to break up. Theses snails also eat large portions of dead or decaying plant material. (Johnson 2005) Their preference food is algae. Some people who keep these as a “pond pet” use them to help keep the growth of foreign matter and algae levels to a minimum. (Johnson 2005)  Also in ponds and or creeks where fish our present they will also feed on the fishes feces or dead fish carcasses (Dillon 2006).
