Reproduction
Stagnicola are hermaphrodites which means they have both
male and female parts for reproduction (Identification
and ecology of Australian freshwater invertebrates 2011). This means that the Family
Lymnaeidae are capable of self
fertilization but that is not usually their means of reproduction
(Identification and ecology of Australian
freshwater invertebrates 2011).
They have direct development in
their life cycle. Direct development is where the juvenile grows in
size
rather than going through stages like larvae
(Hickman et al. 2009). The eggs of Lymnaeidae are laid in
a characteristic gelatinous mass typically stuck to aquatic plants or rocks
(Nordsieck 2011).
