Myrmeleon immaculatus

Interactions

Myrmeleon immaculatus eat many different types of arthropods but their main food source is ants. Antlions use their enlarged mandibles to seize and kill prey. Each jaw of the mandible is comprised of 3 teeth with setae in between them as well as shot labial palps, which can be seen in the picture to the right. (Lucas and Stange 1981)

Interestingly enough, Antlion's sometimes become the prey. Certain wasps will allow themselves to be captured by the Antlion larva. Once caught they deposit their eggs underneath the jaws where the eggs can develop into an internal parasite. (Marshall 2006)
