Stenella coeruleoalba
Habitat
Striped Dolphins have an extremely
wide and diverse range of habitats. They can be found in almost
all of the world’s oceans, excluding the Antarctic. They are
most commonly found in warm, tropical waters (Encyclopedia of
Life). Although Striped Dolphins can be found in many
regions around the world, the Northern point of their range
seems to be around Denmark in the Atlantic Ocean, the Sea of
Japan in the Western Pacific, and Washington in the East
Pacific. The Striped Dolphin can also be found as far south as
Australia and the southern tip of Africa (Reeves 2002). These
dolphins can be seen near coastlines and in deeper waters,
although they are more common in open ocean (Encyclopedia of
Life).
Striped Dolphins also tend to move slightly based
on seasonal changes. They also tend to move or change locations
based on the presence of warmer ocean currents (Reeves 2002).
These dolphins cannot only be found in the world’s
ocean, but also in many smaller bodies of water such as the Gulf
of Mexico. In fact, Striped Dolphins are the most common dolphin
species in the Mediterranean Sea (Reeves 2002).
