Medicinal Importance

thaimed.usOpium is extremely important in the medicinal world, and is used extraordinarily often in hospitals around the world.  Before its modern uses, opium was refined by natives and used as an aphrodisiac, sedative, decongestant, hypnotic, painkiller, narcotic, and muscle relaxant.  In ancient days, opium was most often used to treat toothaches, and coughs, but in current times, opium is most commonly associated with narcotic painkillers, such as Morphine and Oxycodone.  Opium is also currently used to treat spasms and diarrhea, but these uses are much less common, and not as widely known to the public.
