One of the more interesting aspects of the T. nutricula is the potential that it's cell transdifferentiation ability holds for human medicine. This process holds potential very similar to adult human stem cell plasticity (Wagners et al. 2004).

T. nutricula is not the only organism known for ontogeny reversal. Podocoryne carnea, Eleutheria dichotoma, Cladonema uchidai, and Perella schneideri are all capable of transforming back into a polyp stage from their medusa stage. What sets Turritopsis nutricula apart is its ability to perform cell transdifferentiation AFTER the onset of sexual reproduction (Piraino et al. 2006).
