Chauliodus sloani uses its photophores located on the side of its body, as well as on its dorsal fin, to attract prey. It then stabs at the prey with its fangs. The main problem that C. sloani must overcome is the lack of light. The adaptation of photophores has helped it to survive with little or no light availability. The high levels of TMAO in C. sloani's body also help it to overcome high salinity. C. sloani is believed to eat everything from shrimp and small crustaceans, even other fish and squid. Because of the adaptation of its jaw, C. sloani can eat other organisms much larger than itself. C. sloani had a closed circulatory system, and digests its food by way of a normal digestive system like that of other animals.
