Streptomyces platensis is a bacterium present in the soil. It was founded in such different region of the world as Japan, and South of Africa. However, regarding to the pH, this organism has a specific range from 5 to 11.5; and the best habitat for this bacterium would be around neutral regarding to the pH of the soil. It is also known to live in colonies because the dispersion spores produced is reduced. Indeed, this bacterium is characterized by a large surface area to increase the production of enzymes, secondary metabolites and absorption.

First, Streptomyces platensis are widespread in soil because of their ability to get nutrients from a multiplicity of complex substrates thanks to the production of numerous enzymes to break down the environment. Hence, the soil becomes more than a habitat, it becomes the bacterium's nutrition! Please, check out the nutrition page for more information!

Then, as mentioned, this bacterium has a great capacity to produce secondary metabolites. It matters because these metabolites are used for protection against the other bacteria or any danger from the environment. The production of primary metabolites will control growth and reproduction whereas the secondary metabolites are facultative but essential for the survival of this particular bacterium. Check out the reproduction page this time!

As other soil bacteria, it may also be found in the intestine of earthworms, in the gut of arthropods or even in their antenna! There is a mutualism with animals thanks to the production of antibiotic from the second metabolism that could be useful for the earthworm or the arthropod according to the last studies done by the department of zoology at the University of Regensburg . In exchange, our organism gets nutritional elements.
