should consider
Streptomyces platensis
as a super bactrium!

As discussed in the habitat page, streptomyces platensis can be find in earthworm or arthropods guts. The interaction among these animals and this bacterium is considered as a mutualism. These organisms, gain something from this exchange. For the bacterium, the guts offers a great deal of nutritious elements. Thanks to the ability to feed, there is production of secondary metabolites, and the animals, they can benefit from this products. The scientist are still working on solving the question about the efficiency of the possible mutualism relationship.
The bacterium can produce secondary product that are really interesting for us as already mentioned. In fact, they produce antibiotic, but also anti-fungi, anti cancer elements and anti-bacterial elements. These products are made during the transition from mycelium vegetative to areal mycelium (cf. reproduction). Thanks to anti fungi or anti bacterial elements, the bacteria found a great way to avoid to be killed. The anti bacterial elements have been greatly studied, especially platensimycin. It is used by the Streptomyces platensis to inhibit the production of the fatty acids needed in the membrane of bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus or
Escherichia coli, and you can learn more about those bacteria by clicking on the link provided!
Here is comes again, a bacterium to kill another bacterium! Which means you should not miss the home page to get as much information as possible!
