Since fungi do not posses chlorophyll, thus can not undergo photosynthesis  like plants or cyanobacteria. They must rely on getting their carbon source else where, otherwise called heterotrophic. Fungi from their hyphae secret chemicals called exo-enzymes. These enzymes break downs the material, and the material is transported in via small pores at the tip of the hyphae.
