A Sight for Sore Eyes

Welcome! Brace yourselves for one of the most cringe-worthy parasites you’ll ever lay your eyes on, literally! Loa loa, more commonly known as the African Eye Worm is a graphic parasite common in many countries in Western and Central Africa.  This parasitic worm spends its adulthood living within the subcutaneous tissues of mammalian eyeballs.  All it takes to contract this eye-dwelling parasite is one little bite from a deerfly contaminated with the larva of Loa loa

We created this website to educate the public on the very interesting parasitic worm Loa loa.  If you are curious to learn about the identity of this interesting organism, a great place to start would be the CLASSIFICATION page. If you want to learn how to avoid contracting this parasite, visit the HABITAT page to learn where it is most prevalent. This website also includes information on MORPHOLOGY, REPRODUCTION, INTERACTIONS and other fun FACTS about this eye-catching organism. Additionally, keep your eyes peeled for the credibility of our research listed on our REFERENCE page.

If you are interested in learning more about Loa loa, check out another website dedicated to this parasite created by Lindsay Borg from Standford University by clicking here.  We also encourage you to view other students websites at http://multipleorganisms.net/
