Adaptations
Very little information is available about the Vertigo cristata.
Land snails in general require sufficient
amounts of:
Moisture:
Water is needed for all basic processes as well as reproduction and
locomotion. In order to move around, snails produce a mucous that
trails behind them as they move. This mucous is mostly made up of
water. In order to reproduce, snail eggs must be deposited in moist
areas for survival. (Lee 2007).
Shelter: Shelter is needed in order to avoid predators. Snails prefer to live in areas with sufficient amounts of calcium in order to maintain their hard shells. In order to obtain the calcium needed, snails will scrape rocks such as limestone and ingest them. (Lee 2007).
