Glossary
Here you will find defined terms that you may be unfamiliar
with, to help you gain a better understanding of the scientific
concepts that this website is portraying.
Coelom-body cavity (Hickman et al., 2007).
Desiccation- an excessive loss of moisture; the process of
drying out (Medical
Dictionary).
Lentic- environment of still waters, such as lakes or ponds (Free
Dictionary).
Lotic- environment of moving waters, such as rivers or streams (Free
Dictionary).
Mantle- soft extension of the body wall which secretes a shell
(Hickman et al., 2007).
Metacercariae- fluke juvenile (cercariae) that has lost its tail
and has become encysted (Hickman et al., 2007).
Odontophore- tooth-bearing organ in molluscs, including the
radula, radular sac, muscles, and cartilages (Hickman
et
al., 2007).
Outcrossing- breeding individuals of different strains, but the
same species (Dictionary.com)
Ovoviviparous- reproduction in which eggs develop within the
maternal body without additional nourishment from
the parents and hatch within the parent or immediately after
laying (Hickman et al., 2007).
Parthenogenesis- unisexual reproduction involving the production
of young by females not fertilized by males
(Hickman et al., 2007).
Radula- rasping tongue used during feeding (Hickman et al.,
2007).
Torsion- a twisting phenomenon in gastropod development that
alters the position of the visceral and pallial organs by 180°
(Hickman et al.,
2007).
