Females are greener in color and tend to perch on the ground.  This behavior is common in both sexes, and is uncommon in dragonflies.  Zigzag darners fly low over the ground and prefer bogs with small, isolated puddles, usually at higher elevations.  The flight season is from late June to September.  They are known to migrate to find mates and more suitable habitats.
