Naiads(immature zigzag darners) use jet propulsion to swim and prey upon many aquatic insects.  Examples include mayfly larvae, mosquito larvae, and freshwater shrimp.  They are also known to eat small fish and tadpoles.  Adult zigzag darners prey upon a variety of flying insects such as mosquitoes, flies, mayflies, moths, butterflies, and flying ants or termites.  All of their hunting is done on the wing.  They do not eat plants because they don't have the characteristic mouthparts necessary for chewing plant matter.
