Horses reproduce sexually. The breeding season for most
mares is when the days and nights are of equal length (March 21st)
and reaches peak at
summer solstice (June 21st). This is the
opportune time to have her bred. After the mare has settled or
become pregnant she will not foal for another eleven months.
Foals are able to stand almost immediately and run soon
thereafter they are born. They are commonly weaned from their
mothers at about 6 months of age and this is often when colts are
gelded too. At around two years of age horses can start to be
ridden. Most start to show signs of old age at around fifteen
years old. Some symptoms of old age are similar to that in
humans such as stiffening of the joints and also grey hairs around
the muzzle and face area. Horses do live to be anywhere from
twenty to thirty years old in most cases. A horse's teeth can
be looked at to determine the approximate age of the animal if it is
unknown. To learn more about figuring out the ages with teeth click
