Nutrition

berriesAmelanchier Canadensis is like every other plant, it gets nutrients from the soil that surrounds the plant. The hyphae of the roots is what actually absorbs the nutrients. The hyphae is the extension of the root that forms the mycelium. Carbon, Nitrogen, and Phosphorous are the most common nutrients that are taken up by plant species.

The Amelanchier Canadensis also provides nutrition small mammals as well as humans. This large shrub produces a small, sweet berry that is dark purple or black in color. These tasty berries tend to be ripe around June or July. Early spring the plant produces the beautiful white flowers that are shown above; the flowers then turn into the early berry dark pink or red in color mid May. Amelanchier Canadensis flowers start the season out beautiful and then end the summer as sweet, tasty berries used to make pies and jams.

In the wild birds, squirrels, raccoons, and bears tend to get most of the berries. Wild birds are quick at snatching the berries well before they have completely ripened.

Get out there quick, late spring/early summer is the time to get the berries. Just make sure to safely pick the berries, no one wants to get sick from a bad berry.
