The Sabal palmetto is an autotroph. Autotrophs are organisms that are able to make their own food through photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a process done by the plant where it takes the energy given by the sun to produce sugar. The sugar is then distributed throughout the plant through the phloem. Through cellular respiration ATP is created. ATP is energy used to fuel the plant.

The plant also recieves its nutrition through the roots. It soaks up water through the roots which then climbs up the tree through the xylem. The plant needs this water for much water is lost during the process of taking in carbon dioxide and turning it into oxygen.
