Nutrition

The primary food sources of the Eurasian water shrew are primarily invertebrates, as well as some smaller invertebrates. This organism hunts primarily under water. Their main source(s) of food consists of snails, worms, insects, small fish (vertebrates), and amphibians such as frogs. The Eurasian water shrew is also known to eat the larvae of Caddis flies.

Image of Neomys fodiensBecause the Eurasian water shrew has a high metabolic rate, it needs to constantly eat all day and year round, which is why shrews can be observed during the winter months, instead of in hibernation. In terms of how much the Eurasian water shrew needs on a daily basis, it eats its body weight in food.
