Welcome to my site all about Rheum rhabarbarum, Rhubarb!

When many people think of rhubarb, they probably think of a fruit that is often used in pies and other delicious desserts. That is somewhat true, but on this webpage, you will find out exactly what rhubarb is, along with tons of other information you may have never known!

Rheum rhabarbarum is the scientific name for rhubarb, also known as the "pie plant". Rhubarb is a perennial vegetable that is grown specifically for its pinkish red edible stalks, or petioles. I will tell you more about the classification of rhubarb, Rheum rhabarbarum, if you click here!

The image to the right shows the leaves and petioles, or stalks, of a grown rhubarb plant. Although the petioles are edible, it is very important to know that the leaves are poisonous!  To learn about the poison found in the leaves, visit the about the poison page!
