Reproduction
Though all terrestrial snail species have different genital set-ups (Nordsieck, 2009), the process of reproduction is generally the same. Almost all land snails are hermaphroditic, meaning they have both male and female genitalia. Gametes are fertilized through internal fertilization. Sperm is transferred into the genital pore in a spermatophore. Once inside, the spermatophores release the sperm and fertilization occurs. The now fertilized eggs are then deposited in a safe, damp substrate until they hatch. Snails do not go through a larval stage, making their lifecycle direct (Hotopp, 2006).
