Reproduction - "the birds and the bees"
Prunus cerasus is an
allotetraploid species. Allotetraploids are created as a result
of both chromosome sets of each parent being present in
gametes. Sour cherry flowers are hermaphroditic, having
both male and female on same flower.
While they are hermaphroditic, they can still do
cross-fertilization. Normally,
sour cherries are self-fertilizing and do not require a pollinator for fertilization,
but bees can still be used.
We eat cherries, but what do cherries do for nutrition?
