Classification of Squilla mantis

The classification of Squilla mantis to each of these different groups are due to the similar characteristics that it shares with other organisms that fall underneath each category. Under each group are shared characteristics.

Domain: Eukarya

-Eukaryotic cells, which meaning all the cells contain a nucleus and membrane bound organelles.

Kingdom: Animalia

-Multicellular, heterotrophic, lack cell wall,  reproduce sexually, is motile (some animals may only be mobile during a certain stages of their life cycle).

             Hippocampus kelloggi

Phylum: Arthropoda

-Have segmented bodies, an exoskeleton,  distinct body regions, jointed appendages, grow by molting, triploblastic (coelomated), true digestive system, antennae.

                                                                                          Theraphosa blondi

This phylogenetic tree shows the levels of development and different morphological traits of each level of different species.

Class: Malacostraca

-Contains many segments (19-20): 5 segments making up the head region, 8 segments in the thorax region, 6 to 7 segments in the abdomen region.

Order: Stomatopoda

-This is the group containing all different types of mantis shrimps. Mantis shrimps tends to live where it is tropical. They are voracious predators. They tend to many colors depending on their geographical  location of the species. They can be classified into smashers or spearers. They go by their common name "Mantis Shrimp" due to the similiarity between them and praying mantis, an insect.

Superfamily: Squilloidea

         -Contains two different families

-Family: Harpiosquillade

-Family: Squillidae- The telson in this family is very distinguishable. They are very sharp and there are at least four intermediate denticles. Also the teeth of the telson are capable to movement.

Genus: Squilla

-In this family, the organisms have adaptive limbs that resemble the praying mantis. These limbs can be used for catching soft prey. The action of catching prey is very fast. These guys are known as "spearers"

Species:  Squilla mantis
           -
These are voracious predators what uses their "spears" to catch prey. They usually live in burrows and are known to hunt out of them They tend to be found in tropical environments. They reproduce sexually.

This phylogenetic tree shows the levels of development and different morphological traits of each level of different species.

This is a phylogenetic tree representing the subclasses of the Class Molacostraca. The Order of Stomatopod (mantis shrimps)  are recognized in the subclass Hoplocarida.
